Writer Spotlight: Post Fracture.

From Indonesia, has been writing on and off since college, but has recently started taking their practice seriously again.

What was it that made you start writing?

I was in a band in college and we didn’t want to do cover songs, so we ended up writing our own. That was where it started.

What experiences have you had that have shaped the writer you are today?

Being in a band taught me that every word matters. We had free space in a song. And after years of not writing, I realised that when something finally needs to be said, it comes out in fragments.

What genres are you writing at the moment? What genres do you enjoy writing?

Fragments and ultra minimalist poetry.

What inspires you to write? Where do you take your inspiration from?

Longing, solitude, and memories of the past.

What does your writing process look like (e.g., environment, tools, setting)?

I write from emotions, feelings, memories, and pain. I put everything in my notes, randomly and unsystematically. Until something moves me and makes me finish them.

What do you envisage when you are writing something new? Are you writing with the intention of sharing your work, or are you simply writing to write, for example?

I write for myself first. I never start with the intention of sharing. It usually begins as a feeling or a memory that needs somewhere to go. Sharing comes later, when I feel the piece has said what it needed to say and needs a space.

Why do you think community is important for writers and creative people?

I don’t really believe in this concept, because we are living in an era where everyone is competing and we are all just super selfish.

But I do believe we need a common mind with the same direction and purpose. So we don’t bite each other, at least. And that could be what you call a community.

What I’m trying to say is, a lot of times people in a community just want something from it. They take what they can and leave when there is nothing left.

So we need souls that connect to each other, not just a bunch of people calling themselves a community.

That is only my opinion. I could be wrong.

Where do you currently share your work?

I have a Substack but I have set it to private for now, as I am currently looking for a publisher.

Why did you submit your work to ? What drew you to our publication?

Honestly, I don’t know why.

What happened was I got an email from Substack that highlighted a couple of contents on the platform. I scrolled and found Blank Canvas Post. I read a word poetry on it.

I clicked. And voila. I submitted.

About the Poem: Crack!

Regarding Crack!, what inspired you to write this piece?

My long past memories and the pain that still randomly pops up in my mind.

What is the context for this piece? What is the main feeling or message behind it?

Literally and metaphorically, it is just a crack. But it hurts. And it stayed.

What was the process of writing this piece like for you? What did this process look like?

It started from feelings, memories, and pain that stayed. I put it in my notes, random and unsystematic. Until something moved me and made me want to think about it and write about it.

Why did you choose to submit this piece specifically to ?

Mostly it was destiny. But also I think this piece is unique, it uses onomatopoeia. I wanted to share it so people notice that there are millions of ways to express how you feel, and that it does not always have to use fancy or super beautiful words.

Writer Spotlight: Post Fracture.

From Indonesia, currently living in Ireland, has been writing on and off since college, having recently started taking it seriously again. Now, they find themselves to be writing more, and wanting to write even more.

What was it that made you want to start writing?

I was in a band that didn’t want to play cover songs. So we wrote our own. I was one of the contributors, and that’s where it started.

What experiences have you had that have shaped the writer you are today?

Being in a band taught me economy of words, every word had to earn its place in a song. Then came years of silence. When I started writing again, what came out were fragments, not full sentences. That silence shaped everything.

What genres are you writing at the moment? What genres do you enjoy writing?

Poetry and fiction. I write both with an ultra-minimalist, fragmentary style, and I enjoy the same. Anything that strips language down to its essential. Something simple, minimum, but deep.

What inspires you to write? Where do you take your inspiration from?

Experience and feeling itself. I need a medium to release it all. My inspiration comes from personal experiences, feelings, or anything that unsettles the mind, the heart, or both.

What does your writing process look like (e.g., environment, tools, setting)?

Ideas come anytime, anywhere. I capture them immediately in my notes, random and unsystematic. Emotions, feelings, memories, the pain, and life itself, all go in there. When I feel the urge to write, I go back to those notes and finish them one by one. No specific environment or setting. Just whenever and wherever it hits.

What do you envisage when you are writing something new? Are you writing with the intention of sharing your work, or are you simply writing to write, for example?

Everything comes from experience, emotion, or pain, whether from the past or the present. I write for myself first. Sharing comes later, when the piece has said what it needed to say.

Why do you think community is important for writers and creative people?

I’m not entirely convinced by the concept of community, because we are greedy and deeply selfish by nature. There are many who only want to take from a community and will leave once there is nothing left to take. What I think we need are people who are connected through feeling. That is what allows us to look out for each other without tearing each other apart. Maybe that is the kind of community you mean? If so, this is good, and I would be part of it.

Where do you currently share your work?

Currently on Substack. That’s where it lives for now.

Why did you submit your work to ? What drew you to our publication?

Some of my fragments needed a bigger room. Blank Canvas Post opened that door, so I took it.

About the Poem: Inhale.

Regarding Inhale, what inspired you to write this piece?

I wanted to write something that involved physical activity, not just the mind and emotions. The feeling of loss, or the presence of something we can no longer control, gave me enough inspiration to execute that idea.

I chose anaphora to deliver it, repeating the same line three times to build intensity, and I think it was the right decision to strengthen the message.

What is the context for this piece? What is the main feeling or message behind it?

I like things with multiple meanings. Inhale carries several. People can interpret it as loss, or as something that has grown too large to contain.

We often repeat our desires hoping they will become real. Or we keep naming something that has consumed us completely.

That is where the inspiration came from. It is fun to read, easy to digest, and carries a meaning that is wide open.

What was the process of writing this piece like for you? What did this process look like?

It started as a note, like everything else. Random and unsystematic.

I kept thinking of someone, always calling their name, in questions and in statements. The idea came from that feeling, something between longing and losing control.

I wrote the first line and repeated it, not because I planned to, but because it felt unfinished. That is when anaphora came in naturally.

Each line heavier than the one before. When I reached ‘I cannot hold on anymore,’ I knew it was done. The piece said what it needed to say.

Why did you choose to submit this piece specifically to ?

Mostly destiny. I came across Blank Canvas Post and something clicked. It felt right for this piece.
Inhale is not a fancy poem. It says what it says, simply and directly.

I felt Blank Canvas would understand that. And I felt this piece needed a bigger room.

From London, England, Jessica - - has been practicing her craft of writing poetry for the last year.

What was it that made you start writing?

I started writing because there were things I didn’t know how to hold anywhere else. Poetry gave me a place to put thoughts and experiences that didn’t sit neatly in conversation. What began as a way of processing gradually became something more deliberate - a way of observing the small contradictions in being human and trying to translate them into language.

What experiences have you had that have shaped the writer you are today?

Much of my writing is shaped by personal experiences of mental health, memory, and the quiet ways our past continues to live inside us. Therapy and reflection have changed how I think about language; less as confession and more as a form of noticing. I’m drawn to the ordinary moments where something deeper is hiding - the places where personal history, identity, and survival quietly overlap.

What genres are you writing at the moment? What genres do you enjoy writing?

At the moment I’m mostly writing contemporary poetry that explores themes of memory, mental health, identity and the quieter inheritances we carry from our upbringing. I’m interested in the tension between what we feel and what we are able to say, and poetry feels like the right form to hold that complexity.

Alongside poetry I’ve also written longer-form contemporary fiction, but I find myself drawn most strongly to poetry because of the precision it demands.

What inspires you to write? Where do you take your inspiration from?

Much of my inspiration comes from ordinary moments that reveal something deeper when you sit with them long enough. A memory, a passing comment, or a feeling that lingers longer than expected often becomes the starting point.

What does your writing process look like (e.g., environment, tools, setting)?

Most poems begin as a line or image that arrives unexpectedly. I’ll usually write that down quickly on my phone or in a notebook before it disappears. From there the process becomes slower and more deliberate. I spend a lot of time refining language, removing what feels unnecessary and trying to find the most precise way to express an idea.

I tend to write in quiet spaces where I can think without interruption, often returning to a poem several times over a few days until it feels complete.

What do you envisage when you are writing something new? Are you writing with the intention of sharing your work, or are you simply writing to write, for example?

Most poems start as a way of trying to understand something - a reaction, a memory, or a thought that hasn’t quite settled yet. Writing allows me to slow that moment down and look at it from different angles until the shape of it becomes clearer.

Only later, once a piece feels finished, do I start to consider whether it might resonate with someone else. I think poetry often begins as something private, but it becomes meaningful when it recognises something shared in the reader.

Why do you think community is important for writers and creative people?

Writing is often a solitary process, but community reminds you that the work doesn’t exist in isolation. Being part of a creative community exposes you to different voices, perspectives, and ways of thinking about language. It also provides encouragement during the long periods where writing can feel uncertain or invisible.

For me, community is less about validation and more about conversation.

Where do you currently share your work?

Substack mainly, though I have begun submitting pieces to literary journals and magazines.

Why did you submit your work to ? What drew you to our publication?

Blank Canvas Post stood out to me because it feels like a space that values thoughtful, emerging voices and encourages writers to explore ideas honestly. I was particularly drawn to the emphasis on reflection and the openness to work that sits between personal experience and broader themes.

Submitting here felt like a natural fit for the kind of writing I’m currently exploring - work that tries to translate personal moments into something more widely recognisable.

About the Poem: The Ash of What We Lit.

Regarding The Ash of What We Lit, what inspired you to write this piece?

The poem began with the image of loving like a lit match or firework. Big and bright but brief. From there it became a way of exploring how love can sometimes feel intense and urgent, driven as much by fear of loss as by connection. I also had a personal shift from being anxiously attached to the opposite and suddenly feeling avoidant in relationships and it made me wonder why - why I had gone into survival mode like this.

What is the context for this piece? What is the feeling or message behind it?

The piece reflects on the tension between loving intensely and learning to protect yourself. It follows the moment when hope no longer rises in the way it once did, and survival takes its place. The poem sits in the uneasy space between healing and emotional numbness.

What was the process of writing this piece like for you? What did this process look like?

The poem developed from a single metaphor and gradually built around the imagery of fire, alarms and ash. Once that framework emerged, the focus was on shaping the emotional shift in the middle of the poem - the point where hope gives way to survival.

Why did you choose to submit this piece specifically to ?

I was drawn to Blank Canvas Post because it feels like a space that values honest, reflective writing and encourages emerging voices. The platform’s focus on community and dialogue around creative work made it feel like a natural place for this piece.

I used to love like a lit match in a paper house, 
all flare, all oxygen, terrified of the dark. 

I called it passion. 
It was probably panic wearing perfume. 

My heart was a smoke alarm that never slept. 
Every delayed text, a siren. 
Every shift in tone, a rupture. 
I didn’t just love. I braced. 

Like if I stopped pouring you would disappear. 
Like if I watched closely enough, I could outrun abandonment. Like if I made myself indispensable, you wouldn’t notice how easy I was to leave. Then heartbreak arrived again, 
not dramatic, 
not cinematic, 
just confirmation. 
That love does leave. 

And for thirty years, 
despite my unravelling, 
hope always stood back up. 
I was proud of that. 
It dusted itself off. 
Whispered next time. 
Kept an optimistic eye on the market. 

Except this time it didn’t. 
This time, 
when he handed me back 
the ash of what we lit, 
something inside me 
did what it does best. 
It survived.

So the sirens stopped. 
The house went cold. 
The match burned out mid air. 

I stopped reaching first. 
Stopped double texting.

Writer Spotlight: Thalia.

is from Johannesberg, and moved to the Cape about five years ago. They currently resides in the Western Cape of South Africa in a small coastal village called Paternoster.

How long have you been writing for?

My earliest writing (which I still have copy of) is from the age of four. A (very) short love letter to my mother. That counts, right?

Jokes aside, I've always loved to write and have always kept a journal. I would say I started to take my writing more seriously a few years ago. The changes ushered in by Covid meant I had more time to write instead of sitting in traffic! So, in a nutshell, practically my whole life, on and off.

What was it (if anything) that made you start writing?

My father is a journalist, so I was surrounded by writing throughout my life. Dad helped me with so many school essays and college projects - writing became a way for us to bond. I realize today just what a big impact this had on my desire to continue to write.

Having said that, I've also been massively inspired by other writers. Julia Cameron's, "The Right to Write" takes the top spot in this regard.

What experiences have you had that have shaped the writer you are today?

I’d say the experience of being alive shapes my writing on the daily. I often write about my inner world, interrogating thoughts and feelings when they land on the page, and trying to understand what they might be pointing to.

Growing up around complicated family dynamics made me attentive to the subtle emotional currents between people. Later, studying drama and psychology deepened my curiosity about character, behaviour, and the stories we carry.

What genres are you writing at the moment? What genres do you enjoy writing?

I usually opt for a conversational style as I'm drawn in by writers who can capture my attention in that way. I’ve dabbled in fiction, but I tend to gravitate back to trying to make sense of my own life. Most of my writing lives in that space - observation, reflection, and the quiet process of understanding what it means to be human.

I've also liberated myself from trying to fit into a particular category. It makes the art of writing far more enjoyable when I simply show up and figure it out on the page.

What inspires you to write? Where do you take your inspiration from?

Two things come to mind.

The first is noticing something in my life that feels worth paying attention to; a thought, a feeling, an experience, or an observation that lingers. Writing gives me a space to explore it, especially because I often find it easier to articulate things on the page first before taking it into a conversation.

The second is would be during moments of upheaval or transition. Some of my strongest bursts of inspiration have come during pivotal chapters - trauma, loss, starting my own business, or getting married. Writing becomes a way of making sense of the experience as it unfolds.

What does your writing process look like (e.g., environment, tools, setting etc.,)?

I used to believe that I had to have a particular set of conditions, a certain 'set-up' if you will, in order to write. Today, I've moved away from that because it restricted me, it placed parameters on a process that flowed a lot more when I just began anywhere, any time.

My process consists of writing in various locations (I usually document this in the piece), at all times, regardless of the tools available. First prize always goes to the good old pen and paper, but if that's not an option, my laptop, my phone, my daily planner, margins of books, you name it. I've lost too many good thoughts while saving it till later when I get home to my notebook.

What do you envisage when you are writing something new? Are you writing with the intention of sharing your work, or are you simply writing to write, for example?

When I start on a new piece, I’m often reminded of my high school English teacher - a true gem - who introduced us to the idea of 'showing, not telling'. That lesson stayed with me. So when I’m writing about a feeling, I usually start with an image. If I’m trying to capture joy, for example, I’ll think of a specific moment that held that feeling and write from there. Those moments become the doorway into my words. A way for me to capture what I want to say but still allowing the reader to use their own imagination.

Until quite recently, most of my writing was for myself. I hadn’t shared my work publicly until joining Substack. Writing has mostly been a private space where I try to understand my inner world and make sense of what I’m experiencing. There have been a few exceptions, though. I sometimes go through seasons of letter writing, where friends and family receive pieces of my thoughts - and my love - on paper.

Now, as I step into this new chapter of sharing my work more openly, it still feels important that writing remains something I do for myself first. But my intention has shifted slightly. When something I’ve written - like the poem selected for this publication - seems to resonate with others, it reminds me that our inner worlds often overlap more than we realise.

At the end of the day, that’s what I hope for: that the words in my heart and mind might reach someone else and be felt there, too.

Why do you think community is important for writers and creative people?

I think community is important for writers and creative people because so much of the process already happens in solitude.

For me, writing can be a very internal and private experience. You spend long stretches of time alone with your thoughts, your questions, and whatever you’re trying to understand or express. Community reminds you that you’re not the only one doing that kind of work.

That's certainly what I've found on Substack in my short time on the platform and it's extremely encouraging. It creates a space where ideas and perspective can be shared. Sometimes another writer can articulate a struggle you didn’t even realise you were having. Other times, simply knowing that someone else understands the process can make the solitary parts feel a little less isolating. In the last few weeks, the Substack community has brought a sense of connection back into something that can easily become very inward-facing.

Why did you submit your work to ? What drew you to our publication?

As mentioned, I'm very new to the Substack community. I was in reader-mode two weeks ago. In other words, reading far more than I was posting! I refreshed my feed and there it was. A sign?

Let me explain.

I had just posted my first poem to the platform (I think it was the day before) and here was asking for submissions. I think excitement prompted me to just put myself out there.

In all honesty, when the successful submission email, my heart literally skipped a beat. I was on the phone in minutes telling my husband and my father (the journalist) all about it. I felt proud of myself for the first time in a while. Thank you for giving me this opportunity. You've genuinely touched a life!

About the Poem, ‘Far From Home at 4pm’.

Regarding ‘Far From Home’, what inspired you to write this piece?

Far From Home at 4 pm is a poem that is very dear to me.

It was written in the depths of grief, inspired by immense amounts of pain.What is the context for ‘Far From Home’?

What is the main feeling or message behind it?

The poem was written during a period of profound upheaval in my life. Over the course of two years, I lost six loved ones. Not long after, Covid arrived, and I relocated across the country.

In the aftermath of all of that, I remember feeling strangely empty. Time seemed to behave differently. Days blurred together, and afternoons - especially around 4 pm - were often the hardest. There was a sense of being stuck in a loop, where the world continued moving but internally everything felt suspended.

That feeling became the heart of the poem. I was trying to capture the disorienting, non-sensical nature of grief - the isolation, the utter terror, and the way ordinary moments can suddenly feel unbearable.

Far From Home at 4pm emerged from that space.

At the time, I couldn’t find my way out of that loop, and looking back I wish I hadn’t put so much pressure on myself to do exactly that. Death and grief are as much a part of our experience on earth as life itself.

My hope is that future readers might recognise a piece of their own journey in the poem and perhaps find comfort in knowing they are not alone.

What was the process of writing this piece like for you? What did the process look like?

This process was very simple, but also very effective. The home I lived in at the time had a little nook in the garden under big, beautiful trees. It became my haven. Far From Home was scrawled into a journal on a particularly difficult day and packed into a box when I moved again. Since then, I've revisited my words and images many times. I'm always transported back to that girl.

I suppose this speaks to what I mentioned earlier with regard to process:
Don't box yourself in. Your best work could be done at a rickety table under a tree.

What made you choose this specific piece to submit to ?

It took courage to post the poem on Substack in the first place. When I saw the it was the very first piece that came to mind.

I admittedly overthink far too many things in my life, but this was a spontaneous decision, one that I am so grateful I made. It's taught me so much in just a few days. From now on, I'm taking more chances on me, putting myself out there and trusting that my work will find the right readers!

I emerge from the afternoon bubble
Soon it will be dusk

Breathing slows;
The evening is my friend
I find peace in the dark

You remained silent
I remained forgotten
Long forgotten
No light at my door

With morning comes agnst;
Midday sees me turn
Another way -
The one I fear.

Hope drains.
The well is barren.
Heat permeates inside.

I surrender.

I emerge from the afternoon bubble.
Soon it will be dusk.
